Israeli forces are said to have killed at least 10 Palestinians in their biggest raid into the Gaza strip since Hamas took control of the region. Most of the dead are reported to be gunmen. A militant from the Islamic Jihad faction was killed while inside his car in what Palestinian medical sources assumed was an air strike because his corpse was completely burnt.
The military operation took place in two areas, one within Gaza City and the other in the southern town of Khan Younis. According to eye witnesses, Israeli troops with tanks and bulldozers rolled into the eastern part of Gaza City, sparking clashes with Palestinian gunmen.
An Israeli army spokesman confirmed that two simultaneous incursions had been launched against “terror threats” but said there had been no air strike. Israel is keen to isolate the militant Hamas faction and analysts say this raid indicates Tel Aviv’s intention to increase military pressure on the group.
