The deadly strain of the bird flu virus has been found in the bodies of at least three birds in two lakes near the Bavarian city of Nuremburg. The cases are the first to surface in Germany this year. The corpses of several more birds are being analysed to see if they also contain the most serious strain of the H5N1 virus.
Nuremburg authorities say a federal epidemiological team are to investigate the causes. Last year some 13 EU countries reported cases of bird flu.
Only last week Czech vets began a cull of around 6,000 turkeys on a farm after tests confirmed the country’s first major outbreak of the deadly form of bird flu in poultry.
