Violent weather hits parts of Europe

Two people have been killed in Vienna after a sudden windstorm, mixed with heavy rain, felled a crane and uprooted numerous trees. The crane driver lost his life as his rig crashed through the roof of the headquarters of the city’s fire department. A 60-year-old woman died after she was hit by a falling tree.

Barbara Streisand’s concert at the city’s baroque Schoenbrunn castle had to be cancelled as a result of the freak weather.

Switzerland was also hit by storms. The Italian-speaking region of Ticino was battered by hail, and a mini-golf course was destroyed in Zurich. Scenes were similar in Germany with violent weather sweeping cities from Munich in the south to Hannover in the north.

Two people have been killed in Germany since Wednesday and flights disrupted at Frankfurt airport, the third largest in Europe. Floods have also returned to the Cornish village of Boscastle in England just three years after the area was devastated by torrential rain.
