Former prime minister Ehud Barak has been sworn in as Israel’s new defence minister a day after the Knesset approved his nomination.

Barak takes over the job a week after regaining the Labour Party leadership – both positions inherited from his predecessor Amir Peretz.

The two took part in a brief ceremony at the defence ministry compound in Tel Aviv.

A former military chief and Israel’s most decorated soldier, Barak himself asked to be nominated to the post last week, saying Israel needed an experienced defence minister as soon as possible.
