Poland refuses to bend on EU treaty

There is to be no deal with Poland on the proposed new EU treaty, in spite of diplomatic efforts by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The German leader had been hosting Polish President Lech Kaczynski in a bid to get him to agree to withdraw his threatened veto.

There is to be an EU summit on June 21 and 22 to resolve the problem of the stalled European Constitution.

Poland is pushing for changes to the bloc’s voting rules under the proposed treaty.

Poland believes the rules in the current text give too much power to big countries, Germany in particular.

Warsaw’s relations with the EU have deteriorated since twins Lech and Jaroslaw Kaczynski took power in Poland in 2005.

In spite of the disagreement, EU leaders still hope a compromise can be reached.
