An emergency Palestinian government has been sworn-in. In the West Bank, President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah has installed Salam Fayad as Prime Minister. This only days after he sacked the Hamas-led government of Ismail Haniyeh, based in Gaza, who came to power just three months ago.
Hamas, which has taken over the Gaza Strip after heaving fighting with Fatah fighters, has rejected Abbas’ declaration.
A spokesman says the new cabinet in the West Bank is “illegitimate” and Haniyeh will stay on as prime minister.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Salam Fayad insisted on what he called the “unity” between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
