Gay pride marchers in Rome demand rights

Fun and frolics in the streets of Rome but there was a political edge to this gay pride parade. Tens of thousands of people took part in the demonstration calling for eqaul rights for same-sex couples. It is an issue that deeply divides the mainly Catholic country.

The centre-left government has proposed a bill that would boost the legal status of gay relationships, giving partners inheritance rights among other measures.

But the move falls short of legalising gay marriage and has stalled in parliament.

The Vatican is at the forefront of the campaign against the bill.
