Police chiefs in Gaza are reported to have ordered their officers to stay at home and not cooperate with Hamas. People are slowly returning to the streets, now the Islamist group has completed its takeover of the coastal territory. Residents spoke of being too scared to leave their houses during the height of the battle.
One inhabitant said food was hard to find in the city and there was little money to buy what provisions there were. Western leaders, including those in the EU, have pledged support for President Abbas and promised continued humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
An economic and diplomatic embargo against the Hamas administration remains in place but it is reported it may be eased for the new government being set up by Abbas.
