There have been angry scenes outside the British embassy in Tehran, where Iranian students protested against a party to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. The building is frequently the focus of anti-Western feeling there, as the United States cut ties with Iran in 1980 after its embassy was taken over.
Police in riot gear circled the mission in an attempt to keep the protestors back. One student said: “Are those Iranians attending the party aware that they are betraying their own country? Are British officials looking for Iranians who betray their country?”
Some of the Iranian guests never made it into the compound. Others were reported to have been taken away by police, though it is not clear if they were under arrest. Diplomats say some foreign envoys were held up for a while, but did eventually make it inside.
