Three in a row for Bertie Ahern

The Irish parliament has elected Bertie Ahern for a third term as prime minister, leading a Fianna Fail-dominated coalition. Ahern secured a slim majority by giving Ireland’s six Green members of parliament their first taste of government.

He should also be able to count on support from his former coalition partner the Progressive Democrats’ remaining two members, and four independents, giving him 90 of the Dail’s 166 seats.

Ahern becomes the first Irish prime minister to win three successive terms in office.
