Israel his launched airstrikes in Gaza in response to a raid into its territory by Palestinian gunmen. Missiles destroyed two buildings in southern Gaza, one belonged to Islamic Jihad and the other was an arms workshop, according to Israeli officials. It is unclear how many, if any casualties there were.
It came after Islamic Jihad said it and the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades were behind the incursion into Israel at the border crossing in Kissufim.
It sparked a gun battle with Israeli soldiers lasting several hours. One of the up to five militants said to have been involved was killed.
It was the first major cross-border raid since Palestinian militants captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and killed two others near the Gaza border a year ago.
Gaza has also been the scene of renewed internal fighting bewteen Fatah and Hamas, the two main militant factions.
A local Hamas commander was killed and dozens from both sides were reported injured.
