The announcement was made in Oviedo by former Spanish Prime Minister Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo. The award was made for Gore’s Contribution to mutual understanding , progress and brotherhood among nations He was of course the losing Democratic candidate in the 2000 US presidential elections, but he’s since gone back to his political roots and reinvented himself as a campaigning ecologist – starring in the Oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth and taking the case to the US congress for positive action to tackle global warming. The Asturias are Spain’s equivalent of the Nobel prize and reward scientific technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work.
