Swiss synagogue fire may have been arson

Swiss police say a fire that destroyed Geneva’s largest synagogue may have been arson. The blaze ripped through the 1970s building early this morning, causing significant damage as flames spread extensively. Some regular worshippers gathered near the building to sing prayers. One man said: “I think it is an intentional crime, that is for sure. But who did it, I can’t tell. The police have to determine that.”

The fire took place during a Jewish holiday, with 200 people at an event in the synagogue yesterday evening. No one was in the building at the time of the early morning fire today. Switzerland is known for its public order and tolerance but has recently become the focus of religious tension, especially among its Muslim community.
