Israel maintains air offensive in Gaza

Israel has continued its string of air raids on Hamas targets in Gaza, striking a position used by security forces. Despite a truce call from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas have again fired rockets into Israel. Israel has been mounting daily air strikes in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 30 Palestinians over the last week, at least 11 of them civilians.

During the same period, one Israeli civilian has been killed in rocket fire from Gaza, which has injured at least 16 others. Israeli forces have seized over 30 Hamas officials, including Hamas Education Mininster Nasser al-Shaer, in overnight raids in the West Bank.

Israel’s foreign ministry has said that if Hamas claims responsibility for the rocket attacks, the leaders would have to pay the consequences. “Members of Hamas should know that any kind of official post in the Palestinian Authority would not serve as immunity for terrorists,” a spokesman said. The UN has voiced its concern, saying it was troubled by Israeli soldiers arresting Palestinian legislators.
