New plea for calm in Gaza ignored

Palestinian factions have renewed efforts to restore calm to the streets of Gaza after meeting late into the night. But within hours there were signs the call was being ignored, amid reports that a Hamas militant had been shot dead. Following the talks between Hamas and Fatah, government spokesman Ghazi Hamad had this to say: “The President gave orders to all security forces to withdraw from the streets and I think also Hamas and Fatah gave orders to their elements in the street to withdraw and to stop all military clashes and to return all kidnapped people.”

At least 10 people have been killed since Friday in the worst factional fighting in months. Yesterday’s violence came despite an apparent deal agreed on Sunday night and prompted interior minister, Hani Qawasmi to resign. It had been hoped that the forming of a unity government in March would put a definitive end to such scenes.
