The outgoing French President, Jacques Chirac, has made a moving farewell speech to the nation which he presided over for 12 years. He will hand over power to President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy tomorrow. “I want to tell you how much trust I have in you and in this country,” he said. “I know that the new President will do his best to lead this country further into the future, and he has my best wishes in this mission, which is demanding, but also the most marvellous service one can give to the country.”
