Deadly flare-up in Gaza factional fighting

world news

| |

At least seven members of Mahmoud Abbas’s Presidential Guard have been killed by Hamas gunmen near the Karni crossing with Israel. Hamas gunmen are reported to have attacked the guards’ training base. This is the fifth day of mounting tension in Gaza. The violence comes despite an apparent truce agreed on Sunday and after the resignation of the Palestinian Interior Minister.

News agencies report that hundreds of fighters loyal to President Abbas’s Fatah faction have entered Gaza from Egypt as possible reinforcements. The Rafah border crossing is said to have been briefly opened to let in a 450-strong contingent which has been training in Egypt. News agencies say the crossing was opened with Israeli approval.
