Work underway on new link across the Danube

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, has dug the first foundations in the construction of a second bridge across the River Danube to Romania.

Celebrations were organised by Bulgaria’s Transport Ministry and the Spanish company responsible for the design and construction of the bridge, FCC.

The 1971-metre link will run from the Bulgarian port of Vidin to the Romanian city of Calafat.

The 236 million euro project was initially agreed in 2000, but the accession of both countries to the European Union this year brought forward the start of the work

The link is to be a key element of the European transport corridor, from Dresden in Germany to Istanbul in Turkey.
