US and Egypt in talks over Iraq security

United States Vice-President Dick Cheney has been in Cairo, holding talks with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, focusing on ways to stem the violence in Iraq.

Iran’s impact on security in the Gulf was also studied as part of Washington’s efforts to stabilise the area.

The talks coincide with a White House announcement that the United States and Iran will meet in Baghdad in the next few weeks to discuss Tehran’s role in Iraq’s security.

The meeting is seen as an historic move as the two countries have not had diplomatic relations for 25 years.
