EU commissioner Olli Rehn has reacted to the news of Tomislav Nikolic’s election as parliament speaker by saying the signals from Serbia were “worrying”. Speaking on Olli Rehn’s behalf, spokeswoman Krisztina Nagy said: “He has taken note of the election of Mr Nikolic as the new speaker of Parliament. In his view the reform-orientated parties should still give careful consideration to the voters’ wishes for a European future and act accordingly. He is troubled by the difficulties of the reform orientated, pro-European parties that won the elections in January to form a government so far.” If no new government is formed by May 14, a new election will have to be called in Serbia.
