Nicolas Sarkozy focused on relations with other countries in his victory speech delivered to supporters, saying improving European-African relations was vital. “The Mediterranean is the key region, it is necessary for us to overcome all the hatred to lead the area towards a big dream of peace and to a big dream of civilisation. I want to say to them that the time has come to build together a Mediterranean union, which will be a connection between Europe and Africa.”
He also said that he believed France was back on the European map. “I sincerely believe in European construction and tonight France is back in Europe. I urge our European partners not to remain deaf to the anger of people who see the European Union not as a protector but as a Trojan horse, of all the threats that come with a changing world.” He also added that France will be by the United States’ side when needed, but they must accept that the two countries may not always agree.
