It is a case of the meetings on the sidelines becoming just as important as the conference itself. The US has held the highest-level contact with Syria in more than two years during a world conference on Iraq in Egypt.
The American Secretary of State met the Syrian ambassador .
On Iraq’s finances, Condoleezza Rice said: “Iraq needs for these creditors that have not yet done so to reduce or to forgive its Saddam era debts. Iraq also needs its Compact partners to provide continuing financial and technical assistance.”
Rice is also said to have exchanged pleasantries with Iran’s foreign minister, with the possibility of further talks later.
The conference is dedicated to working out ways to help Iraq become more stable.
After a long period of tense relations, Rice is understood to have held 30 minutes of talks with the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem.
