EU pledges to help Syria with Iraqi refugees

world news

| |

The European Union is pledging to help Syria deal with Iraqi refugees pouring into the country. The EU’s aid commissioner Louis Michel has had a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad. Damascus has been calling on the international community to help cope with the estimated 1.2 million Iraqis who’ve fled to Syria. It says there is great pressure on infrastructure and services.

The EU says it will provide diplomatic, logistical and humanitarian expertise. Damascus has refused entry to more than 1000 Palestinians in Iraq who have taken shelter on the border.
