Despite massive protests Abdullah Gul is refusing to withdraw from Turkey’s presidential vote. The Foreign Minister held an impromptu news conference in Ankara to say the election process has begun and he will remain his party’s candidate. He also rejected having any Islamist agenda. The main secularist opposition party has asked the Constitutional Court to rule last week’s vote invalid. If it does, the prime minister must call snap elections.
