A French aid worker who has been freed after being kidnapped in Afghanistan has issued an appeal for the release of other captives. The woman, known only as Celine, was let go as a “gesture of goodwill” in the southern province of Kandahar, the Taliban’s heartland.
Shortly after returning to the French embassy she urged her captors to also show mercy towards her colleague, Eric, as well as three Afghans abducted along with them earlier this month. “Like me, Eric came to the country in peace,” she added. A Taliban spokesman says the deadline for the release of the remaining captives has been extended by a week. The Taliban wants France to withdraw its Nato-led troops from Afghanistan and release Taliban fighters held by the Afghan government.
