A court investigating a police beating of an arrested man in Spain has been handed CCTV footage to help in the case. The video – from hidden cameras placed by Spain’s internal affairs department – shows four Catalonian officers punching and kicking the detainee in a Barcelona station on March 31 this year.
All four officers face charges of mistreatment and have been suspended without pay. The victim maintains he was beaten until he lost consciousness, whilst the lawyer for the policemen claims the violence was necessary to subdue the man. It’s not the only trial of police mistreatment currently being held in Spain; another Barcelona court is hearing the case of a female police officer who hit a detainee – which was also caught on camera.
