Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich has rejected President Viktor Yushchenko’s revised election date proposal. He said both it and an earlier decree setting the poll for May 27th are unconstitutional.
The two leaders are locked in a power-struggle over which direction Ukraine should take. Yushchenko favours closer ties with the West while Yanukovich, whose bloc dominates parliament, wants to retain links with Russia.
The President has accused his opponents of using illegal tactics in the assembly and cited that as his reason for calling an early election
Yesterday he put the date back by a month to give the country more time to prepare. The pair have had several meetings and both have indicated a
willingness to compromise.
Supporters of both sides have kept the pressure up outside the Constitutional Court, which has been called in to make a ruling on the issue.
