Russian concerns over a planned US missile shield in Europe have been dismissed by Condoleezza Rice.
The Secretary of State was speaking in Oslo ahead of NATO talks with Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov.
“Let us be real about this,” she told reporters.
“The idea that somehow ten interceptors and a few radars in eastern Europe are going to threaten the Soviet strategic deterrent is purely ludicrous and everybody knows it.
“The Russians have thousands of warheads. The idea that you can somehow stop the Russian strategic nuclear deterrent with a few interceptors just does not make sense.”
The US says the missile shield would help fend off what it sees as possible attacks by countries such as Iran and North Korea.
