New view of the Sun from NASA


Staring at the Sun has taken on a new dimension. NASA has unveiled the first ever 3D images of our nearest star, taken by the twin-hulled Stereo spacecraft, itself no bigger than a golf cart. The project’s co-ordinator, Doctor Paulett Liewer, explained the significance at a press call in the United States: “By going into Space we can look directly at the corona by using ultra-violet light, not visible light.” Solar storms can pose a threat to spacecraft in orbit as well as astronauts and aircraft communication systems, and electricity networks on Earth.
