Record voter turnout in French elex

French voters turned out in record numbers on Sunday, with participation put at 85 percent – the highest for nearly 50 years. It was undoubtedly the result of massive campaigns urging people to participate to avoid a repeat of the 2002 showdown between President Jacques Chirac and the far-right National Front leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen.
