Iran says its production of nuclear fuel has entered an “industrial stage.”

The announcement came as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led national celebrations a year to the day after the Islamic Republic first said it had enriched small amounts of uranium.

Speaking at the enrichment facility at the desert site of Natanz, the Iranian President declared his country had joined “the nuclear club of nations”.

The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on Tehran amid fears it secretly aims to produce nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this.

Students in the capital showed their support for the nuclear project by burning British and US flags.

Meanwhile, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani warned his country would be forced to review its membership of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if it faces further pressure over its atomic programme.
