Ukraine celebrates Easter amid political deadlock

Several hundred supporters of Ukrainian Prime Minister have celebrated Easter in Kiev’s main square.

Even the icing on some of the Easter cakes was blue and white – the colours of Viktor Yanukovich’s Party of Regions.

His supporters – many of whom had been brought by bus from his power base in eastern Ukraine – are demanding President Viktor Yushchenko resign after he issued a decree on Monday to dissolve parliament and call for new elections.

Both leaders prayed at Easter services this weekend in their respective power bases.

Yanukovich attended mass in the eastern city of Donetsk with his family while Yushchenko was seen at Kiev’s St Sophia Cathedral with his wife and daughter.

The last meeting between the two men on Friday ended in deadlock.

The rival political factions are gearing up for big street rallies this coming week.
