Some of the world’s natural wonders are under threat from climate change, according to a leading environmental group. As global warming melts the ice caps, sea temperatures will heat up and even the Great Barrier Reef is not safe. The warning comes as the UN’s environmental panel, meeting in Brussels, prepares to publish a major report.
The World Wide Fund for Nature says some species are already under threat as breeding places are washed away by rising sea levels.
WWF representative Hans Verolme: “Our expectations are of the politicians, who this year will need to make a very firm decision to start new negotiations, binding negotiations for further deep reductions in carbon pollution.”
The group’s scientists say climate change is happening very quickly and opportunities to manage environment conservation are fast disappearing. With the G8 countries meeting later this year, now is the time to secure a commitment to a 30% cut in emissions by the year 2020.
