French aid workers missing in Afghanistan

Two French nationals working for the Terre d’Enfance relief agency have gone missing in Afghanistan. It is believed the pair disappeared while driving to the south-western province of Nimroz. Taliban insurgents have been active in the area recently.

The Reuters news agency says a man claiming to be a Taliban spokesman said the pair had been kidnapped along with three Afghans. The disappearance follows the abduction of a reporter for an Italian daily in the lawless Helmand province.

Daniele Mastrogiacomo was released two weeks ago when Kabul freed five Taliban officials, but his driver was killed and his translator is still captive.
