The speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi says she has delivered a message from the Israeli Prime Minister to Syrian President Basher al-Assad, saying he was ready to talk peace. Pelosi also insisted that during her meeting with Assad she had not shied away from the subject of Syria harbouring terrorists.
“We expressed our concern about Syria’s connection with Hezbollah and Hamas,” said Pelosi. “These are important issues, not only in the fight against terrorism but a top priority for peace in the Middle East. We expressed our interest in using our position to promote peace between Israel and Syria and the importance of Syria’s role with Hamas in promoting peace between the Palestinians and Israel.”
Syria’s peace talks with Israel would centre on the return of the Golan Heights. The strategic plateau has been occupied by Israel since the six day war in 1967. Up until the year 2000 the two countries were discussing the area. But those talks collapsed. Israel’s refusal to give up the Golan Heights has always stood as a block to any peace agreement with the Arab nations.
