Chinese "heroes" give up their housing battle

A Chinese couple, who became national celebrities when they held off developers who wanted to demolish their home, have finally given up their battle. Wu Ping and Yang Wu lived for three years in the middle of a 10-metre deep pit in the southern city of Chongqing.

The house had no electricty or water and no way in or out. They had been offered compensation by the property company but they said it was not enough and demanded half a million euros, plus a house of the same size.

Their supporters hailed them as “heroic rebels” of the people’s cause in the face of China’s breakneck development. To the developers they were stubborn troublemakers standing in the way of a multi-million euro development.

Wu Ping and Yang Wu never missed an opportunity for media exposure. But in the end they succumbed to the pressure, accepting a new apartment. It’s not yet known if a cash offer was also made.
