A Swiss man is in jail in Thailand tonight, starting a 10-year sentence, for spray-painting over pictures of the country’s king. 57-year-old Oliver Jufer, a Thai resident with a Thai wife, was arrested as he defaced posters on walls in the northern town of Chang Mai. He had apparently been drinking.
He could have faced 75 years in jail but, because he pleaded guilty to his crime, a court sentenced him to only ten. He does have the right to appeal but he has not yet confirmed if he will. His best hope may lie with the possibility of a pardon from King Bhumibol, the very man he has been found guilty of insulting.
