Police in the Basque country are on high alert amid fears of a fresh bomb attack from the separatist group ETA. It follows the arrest of eight suspected ETA members yesterday, including that of José Angel Lerín. Lerín has been on the run for two years after being convicted of assaulting a police officer.
Police raids also uncovered faked police documents, a pistol stolen from a French arms factory and a reported 30 kilos of explosive. Detonating instructions written in Basque were also found. All this has led authorities to believe that an attack may be imminent. Basque Interior Minister Javier Balza said the police are working on the basis that ETA is planning action. In December the group claimed responsibility for a car bomb at Madrid airport that killed two people, breaking a nine-month ceasefire that it insists still applies.
