Former World Cup winning star Diego Maradona has been admitted to hospital in Buenos Aires after falling ill. The 46-year-old Argentinean has a history of health problems brought on by an excessive lifestyle. Guemes hospital is under seige from journalists, and a police cordon has been thrown around the building.
Doctors say his illness is not related to consumption of illegal substances, but just days ago Maradona’s personal doctor said he had recently put on weight and smoked too many cigars. Maradona nearly died three years ago with heart problems, and in 2005 he had his stomach stapled to try to reduce his ballooning figure, after which he lost 30 kilos. He has also battled with cocaine addiction.
However his on field magic has cast a lasting spell over the man, and Maradona is a national, and international, idol, whose every breath is intently followed.
