Discussions on Turkey’s accession to the EU got the green light again today – as the European Union agreed to start negotiations on enterprise and industrial policy. Discussions on the second of 35 policy areas required for EU entry will begin tomorrow. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes industry is one key area for the countries accession.
The problems of the European union becomes solved through the membership of Turkey”, rallied Erdogan in Ankara. “Questions of energy? Turkey is the answer. Labor forces? Security?, stability? – Again Turkey is the answer.”
After starting in December 2005, Turkey’s accession talks were suspended in December last year because of Ankara’s refusal to open airports and ports with EU member Cyprus – which Turkey does not recognise. The island has often been the sticking point in negotiations, with the EU stating the no policy areas would be closed until Turkey opened it ports.
