Children held by gunmen on bus in Philippines

A hostage drama is unfolding in the Philippines where more than 30 pupils and two teachers are being held at gunpoint on a a school bus in the capital, Manila. The two hostage-takers are believed to be armed with a machine gun, a revolver and two hand grenades.

Police have surrounded the vehicle and negotiations are underway. Parents looked on in desperation as children signalled to them from inside. There is no indication any of the hostages have been harmed at this stage.

It is reported the men want to highlight the lack of educational opportunities for children from a slum community. Earlier reports suggested the pair had been fleeing the police after a failed robbery.

A local politician approached the bus to talk to the gunmen and try to persuade them to surrender.
