At least four people are dead after a sewage reservoir burst near a village in the Northern Gaza strip. At least 25 more people have been injured and many are still unaccounted for as a torrent of putrid water and waste buried homes in the village of Umm al-Naser. Two children aged one and two are among the dead. Hamas militants and rescuers are helping in the search to find those buried in the sewage.
The cause of the eruption is unclear but locals are blaming the municipal government for failing to reduce the mounting sewage problem. Palestinian Interior Minister Hani al-Qawasmi raced to the village only to be greeted by angry gunmen opening fire. A spokesman for the minister says he’s ordered an investigation into what caused the wave of sewage.
