Heavy fighting has broken out in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu. According to reports, at least 14 people died when Ethiopian troops, who are military allies of the Somalian government, entered an insurgent stronghold in the city centre. Hundreds of masked fighters are said to have confronted the troops and witnesses say the bodies of Ethiopian soldiers were dragged through the streets and then burned.

Ethiopia sent soldiers into Somalia in December to counter an Islamic movement that threatened to destroy Somalia’s internationally-recognized government. Scores of civilians have been caught up in the fighting. To add to their problems, doctors have reported a suspected out break of Cholera in the south of the country which has already killed more then 20 people.
