An agreement has been reached among major world powers on new sanctions against Iran. Ambassadors to the UN from the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany have agreed on a text to be sent to the Security Council. The draft text would reportedly increase an earlier list of Iranian groups and companies subject to an assets freeze. All arms exports from Iran would also be banned.
Alejandro Wolff is the acting permanent representative to the UN: “We have an agreement in principle based on some additional changes that were introduced and presented today by some delegations. So it’s new elements and understandings that need confirmation from capitals. But it is a package approach that, if approved by capitals, would be essentially the way forward in a resolution.”
The action comes after Iran’s refusal to stop uranium enrichment. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says any new resolutions won’t stop his country’s nuclear development, which he maintains are only for civilian purposes.
