US and Mexican leaders to discuss immigration

He is said to be looking for a fresh start in relations. President Bush will meet Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon later today as part of his tour of Latin America. Illegal immigration from Mexico to the US is expected to be the main topic. It has been a thorn in the side of relations between the two countries for years.

The US president was greeted with anti-US protests when he landed in Merida, where security is extremely high. Observers say Mexico feels neglected by the US, with a feeling that President Bush has become distracted by the Iraq war. The US leader had promised to make Mexico a priority when he took office in 2001.
