EU mission to solve Lebanese power struggle

world news

Javier Solana is on a mission to find a solution to the political crisis gripping Lebanon. The European Union foreign policy chief has arrived in Beirut at the start of a visit to the Middle East. The trip will also take him to Syria and Saudi Arabia. He says he would like to ease a struggle for power in Lebanon before a summit of Arab leaders on March 28: “We would like very much, as far as Lebanon is concerned, to continue to help the Lebanese people, to help the legitimate government overcome the difficulties, and to be able to be the Lebanon that so many people have dreamed of.” Lebanon’s power struggle is between the anti-Syrian majority coalition and an opposition that includes Hezbollah, backed by Syria and Iran.
