A suicide car bomber blew up a truck carrying Shi’ite pilgrims killing 19 and wounding 25 in the central Karrada district. The pilgrims had been returning from the holy city of Kerbala, south of Baghdad, where millions gathered over the weekend for a major Shi’ite religious ritual despite attacks by Sunni insurgents that claimed many victims. In another deadly strike a suicide bomber blew himself up on a minibus leaving ten dead and eight wounded in the northeast of the capital. The carnage comes just 24-hours after a conference in the city where Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki urged the world and regional powers to do all they could to help contain the violence which threatens to plunge Iraq into all-out civil war.
