Green for go at Geneva

The Geneva Motor Show has been officially opened by the Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey, against the backdrop of a political debate in the country on whether more fuel efficient engines are really making a difference to the environment, given that Switzerland’s roads are filling up with more and more cars.

Among the 250 exhibitors in Geneva is the Chinese carmaker Brilliance Jinbei which has just started shipping vehicles to Germany where they will go on sale later this month.

The show’s general manager, Rolf Studer, said they get more hybrid cars each year with over 40 vehicles this year using alternative energy or with alternative engines.

The show is taking place just after the European Commission said it will force carmakers to slash greenhouse gas emissions from new cars by almost a fifth within five years.
