French National Front leader Jean Marie Le Pen says he still cannot confirm that he will be a candidate in the French presidential elections. He has to submit forms signed by 500 elected politicians in the next two weeks to run. But Le Pen says some who promised to back him have changed their minds: “I was worried and now I’m uneasy because of the defection of a certain number of city mayors who had given their quite solemn agreement to present their official documents,” he said.
The far-right candidate said the same thing before the last elections. But he gathered the signatures and reached the second round. This time, Le Pen says “fake journalists” told local officials they would face “reprisals” if they support him. It may be true. Police say there is evidence someone has hacked into a list of Le Pen’s potential sponsors.
