Once a sea captain, Romania’s President Traian Basescu is now in stormy waters, with efforts by the leftist opposition to have him impeached. Accused of unconstitutional behaviour, he will be the focus of a parliamentary commission, due to report its findings in three weeks time.

It is claimed Basescu tried to trigger early elections and to oust the prime minister, as well as meddling in the justice system and protecting certain special interest groups. Basescu, who remains popular with the public, firmly denies violating the constitution.
